Infographic: The Assad Coalition
With the fall of opposition-controlled eastern Aleppo looming, the odds of a total military victory by Bashar al-Assad increase. But what with this mean for the future of Syria? A unified and effective military that can exercise credible control over the country is key to maintaining stability. It is not clear that the Syrian armed forces can serve this role even in the event of an Assad victory. The crumbling Syrian military has been heavily propped up by the Russian and Iranian interventions, and its combat forces have been reinforced or even supplanted by a dizzying array of foreign and local militias. It is unclear how competing power dynamics among the forces in the “Assad Coalition” will evolve in a post-war period.
