TSI Syria Update: August 30, 2017

A brief overview of key military, political, and humanitarian news developments in Syria.

Military

  • Tuesday’s agreement between ISIS and the Syrian government to allegedly allow roughly 10,000 civilians from the Uqayrbat region to evacuate to Idlib reportedly failed for unknown reasons today. (Smart News-AR)
  • As of Wednesday, clashes between Syrian government forces and ISIS in Raqqa province reportedly killed at least 64 combatants in the past 24 hours. (AFP)
  • The US-led Coalition conducted an airstrike to block a convoy moving ISIS fighters from Lebanon to Deir Ezzor. The Coalition airstrike cratered a road heading east between Hamaymah and Al-Bukamal ahead of the convoy to prevent its advance. Pentagon spokesman Ryan Dillon recently stated the ISIS forces would be “absolutely lucrative targets.” (@AFP, @GebeilyM, DoD, NY Times)
  • Eight Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighters were reportedly killed in battles with ISIS in Raqqa city, including the Manbij Military Council Chief. (Qasioun, SDF-AR, Smart News-AR)

Political

  • Today Human Rights Watch called for an independent investigation of disappeared people in Syria, in order to identify mass graves. (HRW, AFP)
  • Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and US Special Presidential Envoy for the Anti-ISIS Coalition Brett McGurk separately criticized the transfer of ISIS fighters to Deir Ezzor along Iraq’s border. Al-Abadi called the transfer “unacceptable,” and McGurk said ISIS fighters should be killed on the battlefield, rather than be bused to Iraq’s border without Iraq’s consent.   • Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met today.
