TSI Syria Update: October 3, 2017

A brief overview of key military, political, and humanitarian news developments in Syria.


  • ISIS has reportedly claimed responsibility for yesterday’s coordinated IED attack on a  central Damascus police station that killed 17 people. The attack has also been claimed by a previously unknown armed group called the “Security Force Battalions” which has posted a statement promising more attacks.  (RevoSpring-AR, @badly_xeroxed, AP)
  • Pro-government airstrikes continue to bombard Idlib province. Among today’s attacks, more than 20 airstrikes reportedly hit the town of Abu al-Thuhur killing six people and injuring 5 more. (Syria Civil Defense Idlib FB-AR)
  • The US-led Coalition reportedly killed 18 civilians gathered near a water well in northern Raqqa city today. (AFP)
  • ISIS has released a video showing two Russian prisoners, reportedly captured last week near al-Shula in Deir Ezzor. At the time Russia denied that any prisoners had been taken. (@CITeam_en, AP, all4syria-AR)


  • Last week, a former Syrian government soldier was convicted in a Swedish court of violating the personal dignity of men killed in Syria. (Washington Post)
  • Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Israel hopes the US will be more involved in Syria as there is a “long international queue lining up to woo Assad,” claiming it would be better for both the US and Israel for the US to weigh in on Syria’s future. (Reuters)
  • Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Turkey is trying to isolate separate moderate opposition from opposition group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in Idlib province. (Reuters)
