A striking feature of Syria’s uprising and revolution has been the ever-increasing role of Syrian women in civil society and in the deliberations of the nationalist Syrian opposition to the Assad regime: especially the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) of the Syrian opposition. Currently the HNC is struggling with the physical and political implications of regime and Russian air attacks on civilians. It is deliberating how to return to the Geneva peace talks. It is discussing ways and means of restoring the cessation of hostilities and dealing with the extremist groups that have insinuated themselves into non-Assad districts of western Syria, thereby giving Russia and the regime license to bomb everywhere. It is considering steps to be taken to liberate eastern Syria from Daesh (ISIS, ISIL, or the Islamic State) without subjecting the people of the east to ruinous renewed rule by the extended family of Bashar al-Assad.

Please join the Atlantic Council’s Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East for a complete discussion of these and other issues on Thursday, July 14, 2016 from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. Hariri Center Director Frederic C. Hof will moderate a discussion with three distinguished Syrian opposition representatives: Dr. Bassma Kodmani, member of the Geneva negotiations team and spokesperson for the opposition; Ms. Alise Mofrej, Syrian politician and member of the negotiations team; and Dr. Seve Aydin-Izouli, lawyer and member of the Bar Association of Paris.
