As international powers meet to discuss the future of Assad in Syria, Syrian civil society activist Raed Fares will travel to Washington to present recommendations for policy analysts to explore.Raed Fares is a leading civil society activist who has implemented US-supported countering-violent extremism (CVE) and civil society support projects inside Syria. He has survived an assassination attempt by the Islamic State (ISIS or ISIL) and multiple attempts by the al-Qaeda affiliated Nusra Front. From the northwestern Syrian town of Kafranbel, Syrian activists have gained global attention with their witty signs and cartoons shaming the Assad regime, ISIS, and more recently, the Russian attacks on their towns. Raed Fares will explain their calls for support from the international community as they continue to raise the flag of the Syrian revolution.

Please join Resident Fellow Faysal Itani of the Atlantic Council’s Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East for a discussion with Raed Fares on recent developments in Syria and how a robust civil society can contribute to an end to the ongoing conflict.

Raed Fares is a Syrian activist whose banners serve as an icon for the Syrian revolution. At the Hariri Center, Faysal Itani focuses on US policy in the Levant, with an emphasis on the conflict in Syria and its regional impact. Ambassador Frederic Hof specializes in the conflict in Syria.
