Research Intern

The Syria Institute (TSI) is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan research institution based in Washington, DC. We are looking for qualified undergraduate- and graduate- level summer interns. This is an exciting opportunity not only to support our Syria-related research initiatives, but also to contribute to TSI’s growth and development. Interns will be a valuable part of our small team and will gain substantive experience. We are looking for people who are willing to dive in and enthusiastically support a variety of research, organizational development, and administrative efforts. Our interns will be encouraged to attend relevant events and take part in other activities that will help deepen their knowledge of the Syria conflict and U.S. policymaking. A successful candidate will be highly motivated to learn and contribute; demonstrate maturity, insight, and flexibility; and have a passion for our mission and vision.

Responsibilities will vary depending on the intern’s individual experience, skill set, and interests. If you have a special skill (graphic design, GIS, language, coding, etc.), let us know: we will put it to good use.

General responsibilities may include:

  1. Conducting open-source research to support various TSI publications and projects
  2. Tracking political, military, and humanitarian developments in Syria
  3. Managing and/or contributing to posts for our social media accounts
  4. Assisting with administrative tasks including research, grant proposal applications, updating calendar events, and daily news updates.
  5. Writing brief pieces for the TSI blog

Desirable qualities/experience/skills:

  • Fast learner who takes initiative and can function independently when needed
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities in a high-pressure environment
  • Detail-oriented
  • Basic understanding of the dynamics of the conflict in Syria
  • Prior research experience, work with social science datasets, and/or policy analysis skills
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Arabic language skills highly desirable, Russian, Kurdish, or Farsi a plus
  • Graphic design, coding, GIS/mapping skills a plus
  • Experience traveling, learning, working in the Middle East is a plus
  • Integrity, professionalism, and a desire to be part of the solution

Our internship positions are unpaid. Full-time is preferred, but we may consider part-time applicants on a case-by-case basis.

Internship Dates: 

A commitment of three months is preferred. Specific dates are flexible.

Communications Intern

Communications Intern

The Syria Institute (TSI) is an independent non-profit and non-partisan research institution based in Washington, DC. We are looking for qualified undergraduate- and graduate- level summer interns. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic young team and contribute to the development of a growing organization. Interns are a valuable part of our team and will gain substantive experience during their time with TSI. We are looking for people who are willing to dive in and enthusiastically support TSI’s many communications-related efforts, as well as other organizational tasks when needed. All of our interns are encouraged to attend relevant DC events and take part in outside trainings and activities that will help deepen their knowledge and skillset. A successful candidate will be highly motivated to learn and contribute, demonstrate maturity, insight, flexibility, and have a passion for our mission and vision.

General responsibilities may include:

  1. Managing and/or contributing to posts for social media accounts on Twitter/Facebook
  2. Optimize social media outreach through tracking and website analytics
  3. Create graphics as needed to support research and publications
  4. Assisting with editing and layout design for publications
  5. Sending out newsletters and developing marketing materials
  6. Drafting blog posts
  7. Updating website calendar and publishing daily news updates
  8. Tracking media hits and developing and maintaining a comprehensive media list

Required qualities/experience/skills:

  • Fast learner who takes initiative and can function independently when needed
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities in a high-pressure environment
  • Excellent writing and editing skills for online and offline audiences
  • Technical experience with design and editing (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop); mapping; data visualizations; Google apps
  • Detail-oriented
  • Creative
  • Integrity, professionalism, solution-oriented
  • Pursuing or earned a degree in communications, international relations or related course of study

Preferred skills:

  • Basic understanding of the dynamics of the conflict in Syria
  • Interest in Middle East politics, governance, and military developments
  • Relevant software experience or technical skills such as coding (HTML, Javascript); website management (WordPress); or data management systems (Salesforce)
  • Prior communications-related experience
  • Arabic language skills nice but not necessary
