Research Intern

The Syria Institute (TSI) is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan research institution based in Washington, DC. Through data-driven research, we aim to educate both policymakers and the public on one of the biggest humanitarian, political, and military crisis in the world today. We are seeking qualified undergraduate- and graduate- level interns to join us in our DC office. Applicants will be reviewed on an open rolling basis.

This is an exciting opportunity not only to support our Syria-related research initiatives, but also to contribute to TSI’s growth and development. Interns are a valuable part of our small team and will gain substantive experience during their time with TSI. We are looking for people who are willing to dive in and enthusiastically support a variety of research, organizational development, and administrative efforts. All of our interns are encouraged to attend relevant events and take part in other activities that will help deepen their knowledge of the Syria conflict and U.S. policymaking. A successful candidate will be highly motivated to learn and contribute; demonstrate maturity, insight, and flexibility; and have a passion for our mission and vision.

Responsibilities will vary depending on the intern’s individual experience, skill set, and interests. If you have a special skill (graphic design, GIS, language, coding, etc.), let us know: we will put it to good use.

General responsibilities may include:

  1. Conducting open-source research to support various TSI publications and projects
  2. Tracking political, military, and humanitarian developments in Syria
  3. Managing and/or contributing to posts for our social media accounts
  4. Assisting with administrative tasks including research, grant proposal applications, updating calendar events, and daily news updates.
  5. Writing brief pieces for the TSI blog

Desirable qualities/experience/skills:

  • Fast learner who takes initiative and can function independently when needed
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities in a high-pressure environment
  • Detail-oriented
  • Basic understanding of the dynamics of the conflict in Syria
  • Prior research experience, work with social science datasets, and/or policy analysis skills
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Arabic language skills highly desirable, Russian, Kurdish, or Farsi a plus
  • Graphic design, coding, GIS/mapping skills a plus
  • Experience traveling, learning, working in the Middle East is a plus
  • Integrity, professionalism, and a desire to be part of the solution

Our internship positions are unpaid. Full-time is preferred, but we may consider part-time applicants on a case-by-case basis.

Internship Dates: 

A commitment of three months is preferred. Specific dates are flexible.

We are looking for a qualified intern to support TSI’s online presence including the website, mailing lists, and and social media platforms. Applicants will be considere on an open rolling basis.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic young team and contribute to the development of a growing organization. Interns are a valuable part of our team and will gain substantive experience during their time with TSI. We are looking for people who are willing to dive in and enthusiastically support TSI’s online outreach efforts, as well as other organizational tasks when needed. All of our interns are encouraged to take part in outside trainings and activities that will help deepen their knowledge and skillset. A successful candidate will be highly motivated to learn and contribute, demonstrate maturity, insight, flexibility, integrity, and have a passion for our mission and vision.

General responsibilities may include:

  1. Update and maintain WordPress website
  2. Manage social media accounts, help identify ways to increase visibility, and create compelling content
  3. Manage mailing lists and newsletters
  4. Help optimize website and boost visibility
  5. Make suggestions for the improvement of website and content management systems
  6. Monitor social media and website analytics
  7. Create graphics as needed to support research and publications
  8. Develop marketing materials for newsletters, social media, and website to promote TSI’s research and publications

Required qualities/experience/skills:

  • Experience with WordPress website maintenance and development
  • Experience with graphic design platforms and ability to do basic graphic editing
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter)
  • Experience with MailChimp (listserv management) preferred
  • Effective communicator with excellent writing and editing skills
  • Fast learner who takes initiative and can function independently when needed
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities in a high-pressure environment
